Bánkitó festival presents Bánk village
Bánk village is located in Nógrád County, at the bottom of Cserhát and Börzsöny mountains. As it is located around a nice, round lake, it is often referred to as a sea tarn (in Hungarian "the eye of the sea"), with its marvelous surroundings embraced by rich forest. Bánk village has ca. 700 inhabitants, but in the summer there may be close to 2500 people spending time here, as many people have summer residences in Bánk. In the weekends the number of visitors may easily reach 4-5000, as people come to swim in the lake or for cultural programs on the lake stage - like the Bánkitó Festival concerts in August!
The Lake ‘The village is located around a lake, that is often called a “sea tarn” by the locals’ – it reads in a document from 1820. People from the village used to say that the lake had an underground connection with the sea, as it was impossible to measure the depth of the water, and it never seemed to rise of the tide, not even in times of heavy rainstorms. Information on the Lake: average depth: 4 m; deepest point: 6 m; surface: 7 hectare 8730 square meters. The lake is deep everywhere, therefore swimming is only allowed at designated swimming areas.
